Information center search help

The search function helps you find IBM(R) eServer(R) Hardware Information Center documents that contain specific words or phrases. The information center contains a large number of documents, so try to use unique descriptive words when searching.

The information center search is, by default, a Boolean AND search. The search only returns documents that contain all the words in your query.

 How to search

To perform a search, type a few descriptive words in the Search field and press the Enter key (or click Go). A search results window provides links to the relevant pages based on the query given.

 Boolean operators

Boolean operators can be used to get more specific results out of the information center search. The words AND, OR, and NOT are valid Boolean operators in a search query.

Boolean Action
AND Searches for documents that contain all of the specified words or phrases.

For example, if you type data AND migration, then only documents that contain both words (data and migration) appear in the search results page. If a document contains only one of the words, it does not match the query and does not appear in the results list.

OR Searches for documents that contain at least one of the specified words or phrases.

For example, if you type data OR migration, then any document that contains either one of the words appears in the results list. If the document contains both of the words, it also matches the query and appears in the results list.

NOT Excludes documents that contain the specified word or phrase.

For example, if you type data NOT migration, the results list only shows documents that contain the word data but do not contain the word migration. If a document contains both words, it does not match the query and does not appear in the results list.

Search queries cannot start with the Boolean operators. Most Boolean operaters act on the query words before and after the operator. The NOT operator works on only the word directly after the operator.

 Search tips

The information center search (by default) only returns documents that contain all the words in your query. The space characters between words is equivalent to a Boolean AND operator.

The search is not case sensitive for query terms. Query words can be in any capitalization. A search for the term database returns exactly the same results as a search for the term DaTaBaSe.

You can use Boolean operators to create a more complex search query. If you do not capitalize Boolean operators, the search uses them as a query term. Use Boolean operators to get different search results.

Use matching quotation marks to perform a phrase search, which returns only documents that contain an exact word match. For example, a search for "data migration" finds only documents that contain the word data followed directly by the word migration. The results of this kind of search are different and more specific than a regular search for data migration (without matching quotation marks). Searching for data migration (without the use of quotation marks) finds documents that contain both words (data and migration), which can occur in any order in the document.

The search ignores most other punctuation marks, so do not use them in search queries.

Search results

The search opens a new window that contains a list of relevant topics based on the query words. The list contains the title and a summary of each search result. Click a link to load the matching document in the content frame of the information center.

Often, search results can contain hundreds of relevant files. For performance reasons, the search results window displays a small subset of the list. If more results are available, a Next button appears at the bottom of the search results window. Click Next to generate the next page of search results. If previous pages of search results are available, click Previous to display the previous page of search results.

Search help

Ensure that you type a valid query. White space and tab characters are not valid search terms.

Ensure that the quotation marks and parentheses match, and that you use no other punctuation.

Ensure that you do not start the query with a Boolean operator. Most Boolean operators need a word before and after the operator.

If the current query produces no search results, try using less specific query terms. Remove words from the query to increase the number of search results, because the information center documents are more likely to contain a smaller combination of the query words.

If your search produces too many search results, try using more specific query terms. Add words to the query to reduce the number of search results, because the search returns only documents that contain all the query words.
